2001A

ID Code: North Pole 22203
Date:  April 2001 - October 2001
Location:  North Pole
Initial ice thickness:  200 cm
Maximum snow depth:  10cm
Ice growth:  -- cm
Surface ice melt:  30 cm
Bottom ice melt:  -- cm

Onset of snow melt:  15 June
Onset of surface ice melt:  30 June
Onset of fall freezeup:  15 August

Time series of ice mass balance and temperature. The top panel is air temperature and the bottom panel upper ocean temperature. The middle panel displays the internal ice temperature using color contours, with blue being cold and red warm. The gray shaded area represents snow depth, black areas are missing data and the dark blue represents the ocean.

In this particular case part of the thermistor string was sheared off the bottom of the ice. This precluded obtaining any information on bottom growth or ablation.

Buoy Position File:  Date (mm/dd/yyyy HH:mm), Latitude (decimal degrees), Longitude (decimal degrees), Buoy ID number

Buoy temperature file:  Date (mm/dd/yyyy HH:mm), top of thermistor probe (all temperatures in degrees C), 10 cm below top of thermistor probe, 20 cm below top of probe, 30 cm below top, 40 cm below top, ....., 430 cm below top, 440 cm below top.

Mass balance file:  Line 1 has filename. Line 2 has headers for summary statistics. Line 3 has summary statistics. Line 4 has metadata. Line 5 has column headers and subsequent lines have date (mm/dd/yyyy HH:mm), position of surface, and position of bottom. These positions can be used to compute snow depth, ice thickness, ice growth, and surface and bottom melt.
